What is plica of knee ?
- Into knee joint plica are embryological remints that have reminds in some people after birth .
- Normally it is a reabsorbed by to time of birth although remints may be present in 20 %to 50 %of knee.
- Because abnormal plica can mimic to meniscus pathology .
- So that this special test is apply when to plica injury is suspected .
Name of special test of plica ?
- There are three test for to check the plica injury of knee joint .
- Hughston’s plica test
- Patellar bowstring test
- Plica shutter test
Purpose of all three test ?
- These three test is used to for check the injury of plica
- These three test is also help in different diagnosis of to knee injury like as to meniscus injury or plica injury .
Hughston’s plica test :-
Technique of performance of test :
- Starting position for to test is supine.
- In to supine position examiner is flexes to knee of patient
- Then do the medially rotates means internal rotation of tibia with to help of one arm & hand while pressing to patella medially with to heel of to other hand .
- Same hand of finger is palpate to medial femoral condyle .
Result of test:
- Patient’s knee is passively flexed &extended while to examiner feels for popping of to plica band under to fingers .
- This popping sound is indicate to positive test .
Patellar Bowstring test :-
Technique of performance of test :
- Starting position for to test is side lying.
- Into side lying put to test leg is uppermost .
- Use to heel of one hand , the examiner pushes to patella medially &hold this position for some time .
- Then examiner is flexes to patient’s knee & do the medially rotates of tibia with to help of other hand .
- After that extended to patient’s knee.
Result of test :
During to extension of knee examiner is feels to any sound .
This sound is indicate to positive test .
Plica Sutter test :-
Technique of performance of test :
- Starting position for to test is sitting.
- Patient is seated on to edge of to examining table with to both knees are flexed to 90 ‘ .
- Examiner is place a finger over to one patella for palpate during of movement .
- After that instructed to patient for extend to knee slowly .
Result of test :
- This test is positive when to patella is stutters or jumps somewhere between to 60 ‘ & 45 ‘ of flexion & smooth in otherwise movement .
- This test is effective only when to not present of joint swellings .
