  • These tests are applied by the to clinic check the malingering around the lower spine.

  • There are two tests for malingering
  1. Burns test
  2. Hoover test

  • The patient is in a sitting position for the test in the starting position.
  • Then the examiner [ therapists ] instruct the patient for doing to kneel on a chair & then bend forward to touch the floor with the fingers.

What is the result of the burns test?

  • This test is positive for malingering if the patient is unable to perform the test or the patient overbalances.

Hoove test:

  • The patient lies supine for the test in the starting position.
  • The examiner [ therapist ] places one hand under each calcaneus bone while the patient’s legs remain relaxed on the examining table.
  • Then the examiner [ therapist ] instructs the patient for doing lift to one leg off the table,& keep the knee joint straight, as
  • For active straight leg raising [ SLR ].
  • If the patient does not lift the leg / the examiner does not feel pressure under the opposite heel, the patient is probably not trying or may be a malingerer.

What is the result of the hoove test?

  • If the lifted limb is weaker, however, the pressure under the normal heel increase, because of the increased effort to lift the weak leg.
  • The two sides are compared for differences.
