Elson’s test

Elson Test

What is an Elson Test?

The Elson Test is a diagnostic procedure used to detect early injuries to the central slip of the extensor tendon in the hand. These injuries, if left untreated, can lead to the development of a Boutonniere Deformity and associated functional limitations. The test is designed to aid in the early detection of such injuries, allowing for timely intervention and preventing further complications.

Purpose

The Elson Test is a diagnostic test used for the early detection of injuries to the central slip of the extensor tendon in the hand, which can lead to a Boutonniere Deformity if left untreated. The purpose of this test is to identify potential injuries and intervene before significant functional limitations occur.

How Elson Test is Performed?

Here’s how the Elson Test is performed:

Positioning:

Place the patient’s hand on a table so that the affected finger’s proximal interphalangeal joint (PIP) is 90 degrees bent over the edge of the table.

Palpation: Palpate (touch and feel) the middle phalanx of the involved finger, which is the finger segment between the PIP joint and the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint.

Resistance: Ask the patient to actively extend the PIP joint while you provide some resistance. This means you gently try to prevent the patient from fully extending the finger.

If there is an injury to the central slip of the extensor tendon, performing this test may reveal an inability to extend the PIP joint fully, indicating a positive result. The test may be performed by healthcare professionals, especially hand surgeons or orthopedic specialists, to aid in the diagnosis of certain hand injuries and conditions.

It’s essential to remember that medical procedures and tests should be carried out by qualified healthcare professionals. If you suspect an injury or have concerns about your hand’s functionality, consult a healthcare provider for proper evaluation and diagnosis.
