Sweater Finger Sign (Jersey Test)
- This Sweater Finger Sign test is also known as the Jersey Test.
- This Sweater Finger Sign test is occurring in the ring finger of the hand.
- This Sweater Finger Sign test is applied to the clinic to check the dysfunction in FDP = Flexor Digitorum Profundus tendon.
- This Sweater Finger Sign test is applied by to therapist when the patient is complaining about wrist pain.
What is the purpose of the Sweater Finger Sign test?
- This sweater finger sign is used to confirm the rupture/integrity of the FDP = Flexor Digitorum Profundus Tendon.
Relevant Anatomy of the Sweater Finger Sign test:
- FDP = Flexor Digitorum Profundus is a fusiform muscle located in deep muscle within the anterior (flexor) compartment of the forearm.
- The FDP = Flexor Digitorum Profundus muscle divides into 4 tendons which are run down on the forearm & closer to the bone.
- These Flexor Digitorum Profundus tendons are inserted into the base of the distal phalanges of all the fingers of the patient hand.
- this Sweater Finger Sign test assists in bending means flexing the fingers in the fingertip joint.
- As to tendons of the FDP = Flexor Digitorum Profundus arise at /below the wrist joint, which allows a power grip by the contraction of the muscle of the wrist joint.
Testing position of the Sweater Finger Sign test:
- The patient’s position for the test is sitting position.
Technique of the performance of the Sweater Finger Sign test:
- The examiner [ therapist ] is asked to make a fist.
- If the distal phalanx of one of the fingers does not flex, the sign is positive for a ruptured flexor digitorum profundus = FDP tendon.
Interpretation of the results of the Sweater Finger Sign test:
- This sweater finger sign is positive when the finger is not bent means not to flex; when the loss of flexion at DIP means flexor digitorum profundus = FDP of one of the fingers of the hand.
- Mostly on the ring finger of the hand.
Clinical Indication of the Sweater Finger Sign test:
- The Jersey test means Sweater Finger Sign test which is indicated in the diagnosis of the FDP = Flexor digitorum profound tendon injury.
