  • This clinical test is applied when the patient is doing the complaining about ankle pain. this test is applied in the examination part of the assessment of the ankle.

  • This test is used to check the syndesmosis injury of the ankle.
  • Sometimes this test is used to for indicates stress fracture.
  • This test is used to check the ligaments injury of the ankle.

How do you perform the heel thump test of the ankle?

  • The starting position for the test is sitting / side-lying.
  • The examiner stabilizes the leg with the help of one hand.
  • With the help of the other hand, the examiner applies a firm thump on the heel with the fist so that the force is applied to the center of the heel & in line with the long axis of the tibia.

  • A positive test in the area of the ankle indicates a syndesmosis injury.
  • Pain along the shaft of the tibia may indicates a stress fracture.
