Frontalis Muscle – Anatomy and Exercise
INTRODUCTION:
The frontalis muscle is a thin, wide, four-sided muscle located at the top front of the skull. The frontalis muscle only serves for facial expressions. It lifts the eyebrows while looking up thus creating a expression.
ORIGIN:
It originates from the Galea aponeutorica.
INSERTION:
This muscle has no bony attachments. The medial fibers continues with those of procerus muscle. The intermediate fibers blend with corrugator and orbicularis oculi. The lateral fibers also blends with orbicularis oculi over the zygomatic process of frontal bone.
NERVE SUPPLY:
The temporal branch of the facial nerve supplies the muscle.
BLOOD SUPPLY:
The Supraorbital and supratrochlear arteries supplies the muscle.
ACTION:
The action of this muscle is to raise the eyebrows and is also responsible for the wrinkles in forehead.
FRONTALIS EXERCISES :
- Keep the face in a neutral position and focus on pulling up the eyebrows.
- Raise the eyebrows until one can feel a pull upward.
- This movement should be held for 5 seconds.
- Initially perform 5 repetitions ans gradually increase the number of repetitions each week.
The antagonist muscles to the frontalis muscle:
- procerus muscle
- corrugator supercilii muscle
- orbicularis oculi muscle
Clinical Importance
Improvement of forehead skin:
The forehead is a location that many people looking to maintain a youthful appearance. As people become ages, wrinkles (form perpendicular to the underlying muscles) in foreheads are most commonly seen.
To reduce this wrinkles, a various treatment of nonsurgical treatment is often the first line of treatment of choice. Nonsurgical treatment options are creams, peels, abrasives, lasers and Botox therapy.
Use of botulinum toxin for forehead and frown lines:
Botulinum toxin injection is the frontalis muscle helps to reduce the wrinkles in the foreheads by reducing the muscle tightness. The decreased muscular tightness helps to reduce in rhytid production and a more good-looking appearance of face mainly forehead.
