These injuries are sometimes referred to as low ankle sprains. This is different from different which is a more severe kind of ankle sprain affecting ligaments connecting the tibia (long bone on the inside of the leg) to the fibula (bone on the outside of the leg).
Patients with a high-arched (“cavovarus”) foot are more likely to get ankle sprains. Furthermore, this foot form puts the peroneal tendons, which support the ankle ligaments, at risk of tearing and weakening.
